ABOUT US

We split our time between our homes in Hawaii and Tonga, home also to humpback whales and dolphins.
Our odyssey began in  Hawaii and then included Tonga, where we swim with magnificent whales. While there we discovered our own island paradise, with sandy beach, beautiful turquoise lagoon, a reef disappearing.
After two decades practically living in the oceans around the world, we have seen changes in the reefs that are undeniable. They are dying.
Hawaii has the highest rate of extinction, of both plants and animals, in the world.
We began taking children into the ocean to count the fish and keep track of their numbers. Returning to the same reef even one year later has been a real eye opener for these children.

In 2005 we began our first Reef restoration project in Tonga which led to a project to develope a coral nursery for restoring other reefs.

Reef Kids International joins other Maui community groups for larger reef counting events. In 2008 assisted projects included Ahihi Action Group, R.E.E.F.,   The Whale Sanctuary, NOAA, Kihei Charter School and The Digibus. It does take a village.

Since a love of whales and dolphins is a big attraction for children, we integrate whale and dolphin interactions with our marine debris patrol program. While finding debris from our boat and cleaning up  the ocean, children find a positive way to impact the marine environment. They help keep the ocean safe for the dolphins and whales.
