Coral Reef Program
We started doing counts of fish in the reefs. The need to restore the reefs in Tonga was immediately apparent. We began by taking broken pieces of coral given to us by tourists traveling through, locals who live in the area, some we found ourselves, and transplanting these pieces to start restoring reefs. This has been a success but the need is greater still.
We are allowing coral reefs to rapidly disappear in our generation even though they host some of the oldest ecosystems on our planet; some over 200 million years old.
Today's rapid development, pollution, destructive fishing practices, as well as unregulated tourism and scuba activities are threatening to destroy the worlds ocean reefs and fish.

"Understanding Carbon Credits"
What is a carbon credit? Carbon credits are a key component of international and national attempts to mitigate the growth in concentration of greenhouse gasses (GHGs). One carbon credit is usually equal to one ton of emitted Carbon dioxide (CO2) avoided or removed by a carbon reducing project.
Carbon trading is an application of an emissions trading approach. For instance, the San Francisco airport is opening a booth so that travelers can buy carbon credits to offset the carbon footprint from flying.
What is a carbon footprint? Your carbon footprint is the sum of all emitions of greenhouse gasses, like CO2, which were induced by your activities in a given time frame. Driving a car, flying on a plane, drinking bottled water, home energy use, all are factors that contribute to your carbon footprint. Essentially it measures the impact of your activities on the environment. (Driving an SUV causes a bigger carbon footprint than driving an electric car).
Carbon footprints can also be applied on a larger scale, to companies, businesses, even Countries.
The average for someone in the US is 7.5 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide emitted per year. You can modify your lifestyle to reduce it. You can also try to offset your carbon footprint if you can. Individuals and businesses can help offset thier carbon dioxide production by buying carbon offsets or planting trees - or coral - to balance the carbon dioxide emmissions.
